“Bok Tower — the Taj Mahal of Florida.” With a tag line like that, I didn’t expect much, but the gardens and the estate are beautiful, and well worth the 2+ hour drive to get us there. My recent mandala interest got me taking a lot of straight-on flower pix.
Jackfruit is the new kid on the block at farmer’s markets and at the natural food fest. It is big, strange looking, and tastes like a mango meeting a pineapple.
We visited Birds of Paradise in Bradenton, which is an exotic bird rescue operation with an amazing collection of profoundly noisy birds. They are doing great work to keep these extremely intelligent birds as happy as possible.
I have to say that this guy has an encyclopedic knowledge of plants, particularly edible plants of Florida, and beyond that, Deane has fascinating stories about each plant. A great way to spend St Patrick’s day!
There were ten or twelve spoonbills down by the weir in Myakka River State Park, and this fella was really working on getting clean.
